Why a Dim Blue Lamp Beats a Blinding Red One

Aim the brightest red lamp you own at a metal plate — and not one electron escapes. Swap in a dim blue glow, and electrons fly off instantly. Crank the red to blinding and still — nothing.

The photoelectric effect in about a minute: light as packets whose energy is set by color, an all-or-nothing escape cost, and why color — not brightness — decides. The full explainer (leftover energy, threshold frequency, sodium by the numbers) is on the channel.

Intro

[0:00] Bears notes, why a dim blue lamp beats a blinding red one. Aim the brightest red lamp you own at a metal plate and not one electron escapes. Swap in a dim blue glow and electrons fly off instantly. Crank the red to blinding and still nothing. So, stop picturing a smooth

Light as packets

[0:15] Wave. Light arrives as separate packets. Each packet's energy is set only by its color. Red packets weak, blue packets strong. Brightness just means more packets per second, never fatter ones.

The escape cost

[0:28] And an electron breaks free only a one single packet pays its whole escape cost at once. Every red packet falls short. A flood of near misses frees nothing. One faint blue packet clears the cost in a single hit and the electron flies. That's E equals H new. Color is energy

E = hν

[0:45] And the packet is called a photon. Brightness counts the packets. Color decides whether any one of them can pay. The full story, the leftover energy, the threshold color, the sodium numbers, is in the long video. Thanks for watching. More at youtube.com/atnickbearbrown.
